5 Simple Steps to Clean Your Makeup Brushes Naturally and Toxin-Free

Okay, answer honestly, when was the last time you cleaned your makeup brushes? Are you thinking, “it's been a while or I've never cleaned them? Or Gosh, I don't even know if I know how to clean them properly.” If you answered with any of these, then you are not alone. I get this question very frequently. I'm sharing 5 simple steps to cleaning your makeup brushes naturally.

5 Simple Steps to Cleaning your Makeup Brushes Naturally and Toxin-Free

I'm so glad I now have some great makeup brushes that apply makeup super well and work and are so soft on my skin. (Check out my favorite brushes here) And I want to take care of them, right? Cleaning them regularly will extend their life. Plus, you don’t want bacteria building up on them, getting into your expensive makeup, and wreaking havoc on your skin.

How often should makeup brushes be cleaned?

You should be washing them about once a week. I know that doesn't always happen. It certainly doesn’t happen weekly at my house, so I get that.

If you're finding that you're breaking out or if you're finding that you are having application issues, if your makeup just isn’t going on as well as it should, then it is definitely time to wash your brushes.

And it’s pretty fast and simple. Pick a day that you don’t plan to wear makeup, so they have time to dry. Or do what I do and have backup brushes to use while they dry.

Makeup Brush Cleaning

  1. Wet the bristles- Okay, answer honestly, when was the last time you cleaned your makeup brushes? Are you thinking, “it's been a while or I've never cleaned them? Or Gosh, I don't even know if I know how to clean them properly.” If you answered with any of these, then you are not alone. I get this question very frequently. I'm sharing 5 simple steps to cleaning your makeup brushes naturally.

  2. Rub bristles on a toxin-free skincare bar- I love the Crunchi Gentle bar. I rub my brush on the gentle bar and I suds it up. It works so well at getting makeup out of the brush.

  3. Use a makeup brush cleansing mat- Take a silicone brush brush cleansing mat and scrub the bristles against the mat to get all of the product out of the brush. And you can tell that it's starting to get clean when the water runs clear. So let's say you're scrubbing it and it still has a lot of makeup on there, which might happen if you haven't washed your brushes in a while - just rinse it out a little bit with some water and then get a little bit more soap and continue scrubbing on the brush cleaning mat.

  4. Rinse- Remember to keep the ferrule dry!

  5. Dry- Gently squeeze it out. You want to hang the brush upside down to dry. And one really great clever thing is to just grab a hair tie and tie it around a towel bar or a hook or something like that and use that to hold the brush upside down to dry.

It really isn’t that hard to wash your brushes. Super, super simple. I'd love to hear when was the last time you washed your brushes! Are there any key steps I missed?
