How to Detox Before Baby - Creating a Healthy Environment and Safe Space for your Newborn and Child Megan Mikkelsen, MPH - Detox Living Strategist, Non-Toxic Makeup Mentor

It’s hard to believe my daughters are 11 and 14 now, my how the time flies, but being pregnant with my first daughter was when I first started immersing myself in improving the health of our home environment.

How to Detox Before Baby and Toxin-Free Talk The Baby Series

  • Start in the laundry room - go product by product, clean out those products you’re not using anymore, and clean out the conventional laundry products you’re still using.  Ask yourself, is something you would use on a brand new baby’s skin?  The laundry room is a great place to start because it has the least number of products.  Basically detergent, fabric softener, and stain remover.  Think about adding natural alternatives like vinegar and wool dryer balls for fabric softener and changing up your laundry detergent to be safer for you and your little one.

  • Think about the products you use every single day and sometimes multiple times per day. How “clean” are those products? Do they include ingredients linked with endocrine disruption or cancer?  We know that (depending on the molecule size of ingredients) they can enter the bloodstream of you and your baby.  You want to make sure the ingredients that are going on that precious skin everyday are safe. If you’re totally lost on where to start with analyzing ingredient labels, check out my online course, Detox by Design | The Home Method.

While many people focus on detoxing their cleaning products first, I think it’s important to first detox the products we use every day and even multiple times per day. Yes, detoxing your cleaning routine is important too, but we often use cleaning products less frequently than our every day personal care products.

Like so many new parents, I assumed that if it was a product made for babies, it must be safe.  Now I know the truth and I can’t wait to share all my knowledge with you in this Toxin-Free Talk Baby Series.
