155 3 Simple Steps to Detoxing Your Home for Good Megan Mikkelsen, MPH - Detox Living Strategist, Non-Toxic Makeup Mentor

It is 5:15 in the morning, and I am sitting in my guest room recording this podcast because I did not want to go out in the cold and go to my she-shed where I usually do my recording. But I have been up since 3:15 and I had ideas swimming in my head so I just thought I better get up and just do it. Why not record right now when everyone else in my house is asleep? I have my sweet golden retriever here Odie. He is asleep in the guest room with me just snoozing in a way I wish I was sleeping. Anyway, getting older is no fun. Insomnia is unfortunately one of the problems with being an into your 40’s lady.

Anyway, here we are and I thought it might just be a great idea to go back to the basics and share three simple steps. The three simple steps that you need to take to detox your home for good. It really doesn't have to be that difficult to detox your home. If you're in that stage where you've just learned that unfortunately, our home environment can be laden with toxins and be causing problems like hormone imbalance, sickness, or asthma or so many things, then this is the episode for you because I have these three simple steps.

But before we get to those, I want to remind you that you can get my ditch and switch guide for free here!

This ditch and switch guide has all my favorites. It's just super simple and to the point and explains both why you should ditch and switch and my favorite products.

3 Simple Steps to Detoxing Your Home for Good

  1. Educate yourself. If you're listening to this podcast, you are likely already on this path. You are educating yourself about why you should live a more green, clean, toxin-free and eco-friendly life. And I'm proud of you for being here and listening. There's also so many other resources on the internet. Of course, I have a lot of resources on my blog at detox.design. I have a lot of resources in my Facebook group, which is also called Toxin-Free Talk. And I have a lot of resources on my Instagram, which is @theMeganMikkelsen. So there are so many things that you can educate yourself with online and there's always going to be two sides to every story. You're going to hear people who say the products we use are fine or safe in small doses. Oh, well that's just hogwash. The standard that I use for my analysis, my personal analysis of whether something is safe or not, is if there is research that has shown that ingredients can cause harm and if there are safe products out there without those harmful ingredients, why wouldn't I choose those products over something that has an ingredient in it that has been proven harmful with research? That is my general take on it and that is the way that I live my life. Find information about the products and the ingredients in the products that you use, and look at research articles to find that information. Research articles over just websites, over just marketing websites if you're looking at a specific product itself.

  2. Set your personal safety level. What does that mean? We all have our own personal compass, right? Instead of your moral compass, I say, use this as your toxin-free living and safety compass. How much are you willing to compromise? Maybe, for example, scents. Maybe you are just starting this process and you love your scented candles. You should really listen to my other podcasts about fragrance and scented candles, if that is you. But I understand that it can be very hard to make that change. If you associate lighting your candle with enjoying your time reading or taking a bath, or whatever that is. Maybe you just decide you’re going to swap out your products, but I'm wait until after your very favorite candle is gone. And then when that one's gone, find a safer replacement for it. Another example of this would be nail polish. I don't really don't think that there's any truly 100% safe nail polish, it just doesn't make sense to me that something could stay on your nails that long and that it could be good for you. So while there are safer options, my favorite being Dazzle Dry, because at least all the research I've done it seems like it is a much safer option. Maybe your personal safety level is that you only paint your nails for special occasions like Christmas or a big event that you have. So you need to figure out what that safety level is.  So that is step number two step number one was educate yourself. Step number two is to set your personal safety

  3. Simply to go room by room in your home and analyze your products and determine if they meet your personal safety level. And the reason why I say go room by room is because if you just decide, oh, I'm going to swap out this one product, you likely are going to still continue to have a lot of products that you don't realize you're using and you will likely not effectively detox your home. Honestly, you're really inspired today. And if you just do one thing that you're swapping out, you likely are going to just kind of give up. I've seen it happen before. So if you go by room and you strategically detox each space, fully knowing what products you want to keep and what products you want to ditch then you will be more effective in this process. The reason why I want you to be more fully adopting this toxin-free life, it's just because I know how much better you will feel.  I know that you will not feel as overwhelmed or worried or stressed because you'll know that with all the products that you bring into your home, all your cleaning products, all your personal care products, that you are doing the best that you can and there's just no price for that. For knowing that you're not potentially using a product that is going to harm you in the future. So when I say go room by room, what I mean is to truly go through every single product and item in that room. I always suggest starting in the laundry room, because we know that bleach, for example, can cause asthma. We know that dryer sheets are very harmful for the environment and the indoor air quality. And you're smelling those very strong fragrances all day long. You wear your clothes all day long and the chemicals that potentially stay in your clothes are on your body all day long and could be absorbed into your bloodstream. So that's why I always suggest starting in the laundry room. As you go room by room, you're deciding if each individual product meets your personal safety level. If it doesn’t, when it’s gone, you replace it with something that does.

So it's that simple, three simple steps. If you want to detox your home in a way that is effective, that makes it so you don't procrastinate. That keeps you not overwhelmed. That keeps you in a place of calm, but also very strategically detoxes your home, then the home method is for you. It's my online course that guides you through every step of the process. It helps you learn how to educate yourself and how to create your personal safety level, as well as walks you through every single room in your home to make sure that you fully detox your home. Nothing gets forgotten with The Home Method. You won't ever be overwhelmed or lost in this process, you will have a plan to fully detox your home. That's why I created the Home Method because I knew that there were people out there that wanted to detox their home, but they were just overwhelmed and they didn't know where to start and they didn't know where to find the information they needed. So I put it all together with videos and guides to help you do it and to help you stop procrastinating and get it done.
