171 Safe Sunscreen - Ingredients to Watch Out For

It is spring and the birds are chirping and the sun is staying out a little bit longer which means maybe you're getting some more time outside. And when we're outside more we need to be wearing more sunscreen. I've had a few podcasts about sunscreen but I thought I would just do another one really focusing on the top ingredients that you should avoid.

I will always suggest you use my favorite facial sunscreen every day. My very very favorite is the Crunchi Sunlight SPF 30. I love it because it gives me full coverage when I wear it under my makeup. It is so great for layering with the rest of my skincare and makeup. So I suggest you go check that out if you're looking for a facial sunscreen that is a non-NANO zinc but also doesn't leave you with that white cast on your face. If you're new to Crunchi you can get $10 off by going to bit.ly/TFT10off . Unfortunately Crunchi does not have a body sunscreen yet we are waiting for it because we know how amazing it's going to be because their facial sunscreen is so good.

In the meantime, when you are buying sunscreen, you may be wondering, okay, what do I need to look for? What are the ingredients I need to really stay away from? Honestly a lot of the sunscreens have gotten a lot better. My biggest fear with a lot of these sunscreens, even the better ones, is that they still have some other filler or preservative ingredients in them that aren't great.

One of my favorite brands is All Good simply because they have clean ingredients without any of these ingredients I'm going to talk about right now. They also have other non-active ingredients that are safe.

Things to look out for in the non-active category:

  • Fragrance. Definitely not natural fragrance either because that doesn't mean anything just because the word natural is in front of it.

  • Parabens

  • PEGs

So you want to look for those at the end of the ingredient label. Those are usually going to be typically in the latter half of the ingredients.

Active ingredients, you want to avoid:

  • Oxybenzone

  • Homosalate

  • Octocrylene

  • Make sure the zinc is non- Nano. What that means is that the zinc molecules are not nanoparticles. So instead of them being absorbed into the body, they're going to sit on top of the skin.

Those are my biggest tips. There's definitely a list of other ingredients you don't want to be in there, but I know how hard it is to go shopping for products. Likely you're at target with your kids, you're scanning the aisle, you have no idea what to get. It's super overwhelming. So I just want to give you those top three you want to look out for and then don't forget about those non active ingredients that also could be exposing you to things that you don't want.

Thank you as always for listening today. Please share this with a friend. If you found it helpful. Just take a quick screenshot, send it to them via text, or maybe share it on your Instagram stories. I would love to connect with you there as well. Feel free to DM me at any time.
